I want to do a game so I started looking at formal game genres and criterias. I have a rough idea of inspiring games like Ori and the Blind forest, and Spiritfarer, which have really dynamic 2d styles and are sort of both based on levels. I learned from my peers about more formal game type classification (like metroid-vania), which I honestly just d9idn’t know about in terms of design. This allowed me to research metroidvania game design and development pathways, since the idea this genre encapsulates is essentially platforms where you need to unlock specific abilities to progress, which narrows what seems to be a super open world into a neat little pathway. typically there is a lot of back and forth, creating environment familiarity, which i also really love.
